This eponymous album is the only one documenting the trio Zikkurat, a very original Czech group. The four tracks included here all come from different concerts held between December 1979 and December 1980. A cross between the space rock jams of Hawkwind and The Fall‘s vitriol, the music is structured in long compositions that often sound like suites of composed fragments and improvised flights. Guitarist Jirí Krivka used many effects, devices such as echo and flanger boxes. The sloppy rhythms and guitar riffs of abrasive first-wave punk meet trippy synthesizers. Autobus displays what the trio could do on its own. Krysar, co-written by Extempore leader Mikolás Chadima, features guest saxophonist Ota Baláz. This 25-minute track is an exciting moment, the level of energy never drops. It includes a flangerified drums solo and a stop-dead finale. Wc Cistící Sul features Chadima, Petr Dikan on Farfisa organ and Jaroslav Zajpt on guitar for the nosiest piece of the set. Some moments are overstretched and the inbreeding of genres can be disconcerting at first, but Zikkurat made it work. It is mad, trashy, urgent. The recordings sound surprisingly good considering the circumstances (the taping of underground concerts in communist Czechoslovakia). A one-of-a-kind experience for fans of experimental rock.01.
