As one of those who did not begin their artistic career in the centre of Czechoslovak musical life, i.e. in Prague, the capital of the country, Věra Špinarova had to overcome considerable obstacles before joining the ranks of the best pop singers. She comes from a small Moravian village and during her school years she first of all tested her talent with a guitar and her own songs which also helped her gain her first success in a competition for promising youngsters. This took place in 1966 in the regional metropolis of Ostrava, in the mid-sixties an important incubator of new vocalists and groups whose specific expression and repertoire formed a kind of counterbalance to the Prague scene. From the very beginning up to the present Ostrava has been Věra 's main place of activity. Her first professional engagement was with the Flamingo group, after which she sang with the Royal Beat and Majestic groups. This was in 1969 and at that time soul was beginning to hold sway among young groups. Věra Špinarova penetrated into the consciousness of the listening public with bold and exuberant recordings of songs from the repertoire of Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson or Cilia Black — and you can still listen to them and Find they have lost nothing of their charm.
The next phase of Věra Špinarova's artistic development was inseparably connected with one of her discoverers — composer, arranger, pianist and experienced bandleader Ivo Pavlík. He began to work systematically with the singer, chose her repertoire, composed songs for her and painstakingly reconstructed his own group as an accompanying ensemble adapted to Věra 's style of singing. In Ivo Pavlik's band, in which the electrified rhythm group was traditionally supplemented with melodic instruments (a tenor saxophone and a trumpet), the way was always wide open to jazz and rock influences and recently trends from the disco sphere have also quite logically manifested themselves. Among excellent instrumentalists capable of creating and improvising Věra Špinarova was able to develop during her concert performances her natural feeling for music and her greatest asset — an exceptionally wide vocal fund. Apart from melodious hits, she also sang blues with great enthusiasm and vitality — for instance, numbers from Janis Joplin's repertoire and rock and jazz evergreens.
Before long Věra Špinarova's import outgrew the regional limit. In 1972 she surprised the public, TV viewers and critics alike with her outstanding rendering of the song Andromeda during her performance at the biggest Czechoslovak festival of popular music — the Bratislava Lyre — and in the same year she made her first LP record on which, at the mere age of twenty, she could afford to present a "memorial" medley of her greatest hits.
Věra Špinarova's second independent album (Životopis — Biography — 1978) presented the singer on the golden middle path as regards both expression and repertoire: neither blues nor rock nor simple hits, but original, "tailor-made" works written for her, apart from Ivo Pavlík, by leading Czechoslovak composers who continue to write songs for her. The fact that this path is also interesting is documented by the record in front of you. The songs on it show that the composers know the singer well and are capable of meeting her aims. This is manifested most clearly in the final composition Rag Doll which will be a great surprise to all those who once and for all time ranked Věra Špinarova in the category of "natural talents" who could hardly master exacting work on a complicated and extensive musical project.
After the twelve years of her professional career Věra Špinarova occupies a secure place among Czechoslovakia's top singers. Apart from three albums, she can boast of almost thirty singles, all highly successful among the public, third place in the Bratislava Lyre competition (1976) and triumphant representation on foreign fora. On her third LP record she presents herself as a mature and versatile singer who has lost nothing of her initial zeal during long years of incessant travel to her listeners.
От себя:
Věra Špinarová – одна из наилучших и наивыразительнейших исполнителей чешского поп / рока. Обладает мощным голосом и темпераментным исполнением. На мой взгляд, в некоторых песнях её вокал похож на Bonnie Tyler.
Этот рип с винила я сделал эксклюзивно для "East Rock". Надеюсь, что англоязычный альбом этой оригинальной певицы будет интересен для любителей музыкального антиквариата, т.к. он не переиздавался на CD.
